qr codes

Quick Response (QR) codes are most commonly included in print-based advertising such as magazines, newspapers and billboards. However, they have also been used recently in television campaigns. They are ideal to combine online and offline marketing strategies, by using mobile technology to engage users.

So how do they work? Each one is set up with a special code designed to perform a set action when a user scans it. Actions can range from loading a website, to calling a phone number, playing a movie or displaying a message. There are many free scanner applications available on smart phones which use the camera to register the code and then coverts it to perform the desired action.

Some great ways to use them include:

  • On product packaging – direct customers to your online order form or related product pages to encourage repeat purchases
  • In store windows – let potential customers research featured products or see unreleased campaign imagery
  • In store – take customers to a discount voucher to encourage their purchase
  • On business cards - direct clients to your mobile site or other relevent information
  • On print advertising material – allow your audience to engage with you instantly by directing them to your website

In all of these examples, it is so important that your QR code is pointing to a mobile optimised webpage; otherwise all of your efforts will be wasted.
